I have been a member of the NMA (National Motorists Association) since their inception, when they were fighting to repeal the 55MNSL and they succeeded, in case you haven't noticed. The NMA is the ONLY drivers' advocacy we have and it amazes me how many driving and riding enthusiasts don't belong and support their efforts. By being a member, you help your own cause. Give them a look see at motorists.org. Then put your money where your right hand and right foot are.

So.....you propose and support NO SPEED LIMITS......Go as fxxken fast as you want.
The speed limits are for others!
Speed limits don't seem to matter.....everyone goes 10-20 over anyway........and you want to go 30-40 over.....
Where does it end? I guess you could go on the autoban and do 150 or so.
What do you want???????????????

Remember Vucan, you started this by writing far more than you know. So let's take this one of your uninformed points at a time...
1. Did I say I support no speed limits? NO I DID NOT! What I do support are speeds established scientifically at the 85th percentile, as they should be according to the federal Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
2. I have been on the Autobahn and apparently you have not. My speed in the unmarked sections (yes, there are those with limits) was usually 85 to 90 mph. I was passing about 2/3 of the traffic - small cars and trucks - and 1/3 was passing me. I was a hell of a lot safer there than on our Interstates because lane discipline is strictly enforced and drivers can have NOTHING in their hands but the wheel. And both hands must be on the wheel. Compare that to here and maybe how you drive.
3. What do I want? I want it to be here like it is in Germany where you must hire an instructor and it takes 2 to 4 months to get a license. Where everyone drives a car no more than 5 years old - there are no used car lots. Repressive? Maybe, but the trade off is good drivers / riders and good vehicles that can be operated well at higher speeds.
Next time, be certain of what you say/write before spouting off with such invective. I hope you don't vote. :ltr:

I forgot to mention that when speed limits are raised, accident and death rates go down. The 55MNSL actually increased the death rate - I repeat RATE. The accident and death rates on the Autobahn are much less than on our Interstates. It's not hard to look all this up. That is, if you'd rather not blurt out unfounded opinions.

Well I sure won't vote for Obama.
If you like the Autoban so much.....goodbye.

You just don't have a clue on how I drive/ride.
This isn't Germany.....we have a lot of total axxholes driving.... it's not going to ever change.
Go as fast as you want....hope you get a lot of tickets.

In that case, vote and vote often. That dufus has got to go. / Yes, I enjoyed my travels on the Autobahn and all of Europe around the Alps, but those countries are too socialistic for me. Things aren't great here, but they are far worse in Europe politically. / You were making assumptions about me, so I just returned the favor. Touche. / I agree that we have a lot of incompetent drivers and that's why I like the way its done in Germany. / Yes, I may drive fast, but only where its permissible. / It would behoove you to just stick to facts and not state brash opinions and assumptions. Or please go back to that other forum where flaming is considered cool.

That's exactly the point. Their people are taught to drive and can do so without a nanny around to scold them.

A similar system here.

The whole problem on our country's freeways is that lane discipline is neither taught nor enforced. It's just too simple a concept for most drivers to understand to keep to the right unless you are passing slower traffic! So what we end up with is people weaving thru traffic dangerously while Dufuses hang out in the left lane chatting and texting on their iphone.

Exactly, our freeways in Michigan were never more dangerous than when they enforced a 55 mph limit. The artificially low limit combined with vehicles traveling at drastically different speeds, very little lane discipline and the added chaos of troopers pulling numerous vehicles over was a disaster.
I have nearly been killed due to a radar cop. Going to work, traffic was traveling about 10 mph over the limit until it came around a corner to find Barney Fife. As everyone hit their brakes, some idiot in a full sized van couldn't stop in time. Fortunately, he had the good sense to get on the shoulder and drive up beside my bike before slowing enough to merge back in behind me. The cop never even noticed...

Yep, happens all the time. I had one pull me over for speeding one night in light traffic on the expressway, 4 lanes. He got right behind me with both of his spotlights shining in my mirrors. I really don't know how he expected me to be able to see behind me to get over to the right and pull over??

My son has his learners permit. In Maryland a new driver has to attend a driver education class. During the class his teacher stated that she consistently drives the exact speed limit in the left lane and laughs at the drivers who get pissed off

I informed him that type of behavior is illegal in some states (unfortunately Maryland is not one of them) and rude in every state. I am just amazed the garbage that is taught to new drivers from "professionals". Worst part is I had the privilege to pay $300 for his "education"

And vulcan had the temerity to criticize me wanting more stringent driver training and reasonable traffic laws. Big problem is, there are many others who think like him. We have a pot full of them here in Oregon - witness our 65mph speed limit on Interstates.

Im currently sitting at JFK airport waiting on my connection to BWI after having spent the last 12 days in Europe. We rented a car in Dublin Ireland and spent 3 days driving all over. I was surprised and impressed by their driving habits. If you are not passing you better be in the left lane (their slow lane) and let others by. Speed limit on highways was always 75 and usually 60 on secondary roads that we would be doing 35 on here at home.

I don't know about my "temerity" and "uninformed points" as you called them, and "many others who think like him" if I may quote you, but you are right about Oregon. Lots of wishful thinking there, from all the green weinie stuff to traffic laws.
We in Arizona have 75 mph speed limits, as do most states in the Southwest.
As far as driver's education and the "German" approach to training....ain't gonna happen.
As a matter of fact most high schools, all around the country, have dropped Driver's Ed.
On top of that there are a lot of unlicensed illegals driving around that can't read English signs.

I agree that it would be nice to have all those pie in the sky wishes that the National Motorists Asso. proposes but as I said....just isn't going to happen.
I don't agree with a lot of their proposals, and many more, "uninformed" as I am, agree with me.
So you have two choices.....bitch about all the uninformeds like me, or ride like your life depended on it. Obey the existing laws, speed when it's safe and the probabilty of getting pulled over is remote.
Around here, even with 75 mph speed limits, most of the traffic is doing at least 85.
That's true in most of the country, and I've been in 47 states.

I do not belong to the NMA. Just curious.....what percentage of drivers/riders do belong. Couldn't find any kind of membership details on their webpage.
Yours truly, Vulcan
