Hello all. '06 Hammer having a speedo problem. Seems to start after the engine warms up. My speedo will quit working intermittently when I pull in the clutch while riding down the road. When I reach down, unplug it, plug it back in it'll work fine for a short time. Untill 2 or 3 clutch pulls later. Back lighting never goes out. Tried replacing speed sensor with a new one. No change. Tried contact cleaner and dielectric grease. No change. Volt tested the plug on top of the sensor with the key on while wiggling all the wires around and found no break in current. Had 12 volts the whole time. Any thoughts or ideas would be great. Thank you...

Update: So i tried something, and it worked. For now. It was weird that this problem only happened when I pulled the clutch. After talking to the local dealer, I found out the 2 systems never "talk" to eachother. Exter weird. So when I looked at the clutch lever, I found a pressure switch on the bottom of it. I unplugged it, went for a ride, and it works great now! Wtf...

Be careful. Someone recently unplugged the clutch safety switch on a XCT (I think that was the bike) and their gear indicator in the display stopped working and something bad happened with the idle or something like that. Anyway, the bikes "brain" did not like having this switch disconnected. May be totally different on a Hammer but you should watch for related problems just in case. Good luck.

My clutch switch was unplugged for a long time before I ever realized it; I swapped out the cable clutch for hydraulic and it comes with a completely new lever/master cylinder too. I unplugged the original and never plugged in the new one. Everything worked great for me EXCEPT trying to start the bike in gear.

Maybe I'm crazy (no... I'm sure that I'm crazy but that's a different topic). So maybe I am misremembering but I thought someone recently here in these forums discussed how disconnecting their clutch safety switch caused bad things to happen to the bike. Maybe someone involved or with better searching skills than I have can find this thread and the relevant posts and provide a link to it. Or, I could just be having yet another senior moment.

Ok, I went and found the thread myself. It was in the last sub-forum in which I was going to look and took me 15 minutes to find. I told you my Google Fu searching skills were poor. Here is the thread in question:

This thread warns that when the clutch safety switch is removed, the gear indicator in the dash stops working and the rev limiter (not the idle as I mistakenly mentioned earlier) changes. I have no first hand knowledge of any of this but wanted those considering removal or bypass of the clutch safety switch to at least know some people have encountered problems related to this with some unspecified Vic bikes. Good luck.

All I can say is, if my gear indicator was affected by my clutch switch, I sure would have noticed a lot sooner than I did. Not entirely sure about the rev limiter, though ;)

Yeah, I've never hit my rev limiter either. However, the thread to which I link mentions a reduction in the rev limiter of 2000 rpm which would likely be noticeable to many riders.

I have no idea why your experience differed so greatly from that reported in the linked thread.

Since the gear indicator disappears when the clutch is pulled in, I always figured that the detection process for the gear indicator did not actually measure the position of some internal tranny part that indicates the current gear. Rather, the bike computer just examines the rpm and speed, consults a built in "table" and assigns the gear that way. This is just a guess on my part although if there was a device that measured gear position, we would likely have seen lots of threads about it breaking, where to buy a new one, and how to install it.

I seem to recall that the gear indicator was calculated based on the speed of various transmission parts as opposed to a gear 'sensor' which would make sense to me why my gear selector was not affected...

If disconnected the clutch switch and now your speedo work.
Start tracing the wires looking for one pinched or shorted out. Look inside the headlight bucket under the seat. Even check to see your battery is good. Don't take it for granted that it looks good make sure it is
