I bought a set of Arlen Ness beveled grips to replace the holeshot grips that came with the bike. Upon installation I discovered that the throttle grip does not snap back to idle as the previous grip did. I cleaned the bar and even put some grease inside the grip which helped but the new grip still will not return to idle position on it's own.

Since I believe the issue is with the grip I have two options, send it back and get another set or make the one I have work. I was thinking that if I were to try to fix them I would just take some sandpaper and sand the inside of the grip. While I am sure this will work I am not sure about the long term effects of this as I don't know if the inside of the grips have a special coating applied to them.


Has anyone else had a similar issue with their grips before?

Have you tried putting a little more slack in your return cable.
Could be that there is a slight difference in the circumference of the cable drum which has changed your cable adjustment from ideal to something else. The return cable too tight will cause it to act like the sleeve is too tight on the bar.
Graphite is better than grease. Grease holds dirt.
However try loosening the return cable a little first before you send it back. Then get some sort of graphite based grease free lube such as what is sold for locks.
That way it won't get sticky on you down the road.

I had a binding problem when I installed my 1/4 throttle ring. Looked all over for the cause. The problem was my throttle and return cables were too tight. I loosened them up and the problem was gone.

If the problem is the grip, there are two possible causes/solutions. One you are already examining which is too tight a fit of the inner diameter of the grip on the outer diameter of the bar. You can test this by just lightly pressing the grip/sleeve onto the bar and determining if it is easily twisted. The other problem occurs if the grip is forced to sit too far onto the bar. In this case, the round end of the bar presses against the inside "flat" end of the grip and causes binding. This is normally fixed by moving the switchbox further out on the bar. This resolves the problem because the switchbox housing controls the position of the grip. However, you may have a tab on the switchbox that prevents it from moving more outboard on the bar. You could consider grinding off this tab but investigate other alternatives before taking this irrevocable step.

I know it's the grip because of difficulty twisting the grip without the throttle cables hooked up to it.

pull off your right hand cheese wedge and look at the throttle cam your bottom cable might be out of the grove. This photo is just sample
but you should be close

Look at it. Find out what it's dragging on. Make it stop dragging. That's pretty much it, right?
Too far up on the bar and dragging at the end of the grip?
Housing in a bind? Not in the dimples of the bars?
Seriously, how many things can it be FFS?

What model do you have? After I installed my new grips on my Highball I had a similar issue. My problem was caused by the thumb wheel cruise control. A little sanding fixed the problem.
