Hey guys and gals,

I was checking out Victory's Facebook page and ran across this discussion on their page. Since I am in the market for a new bike, it concerned me. Being that it's the internet, there's a chance that this guy is just trolling on their home page. However, I was wondering if this has even been an issue on your bikes? Thanks in advance!cheers

"Just got home from Carlisle Pa Bike Fest. One of the main reasons I went was to do a few demo rides on a few Victory motorcycles. After riding 5 bikes there I am left wondering why every one of them felt like I was smashing rocks inside the trans with every shift. I know that the transmission was supposed to be improved in 2011 but I feel like there is a long way to go. None of the demo bikes shifted as well as my 65000 mile Kawasaki Nomad.
All of them had what I considered to be excessive drive train lash. I'm very disappointed right now because I was very close to buying a 2012 or 2013 Victory.
Also on the Cross Country and Vision models I test rode. I thought maybe something was loose on the 1st CC I rode. So I rode another CC and it sounded the same way. Definite thunking sound every time you hit a bump. Same with the Vision.
Every time anyone in our group mentioned anything but praise to the Victory staff with the demo truck they would go to the same line about how these bikes are so abused as demos and that it is not normal for the bikes to have these issues. Sorry not buying that! No other manufacturer in the years I've done demo rides has ever tried that line. Normally they are willing to listen to the input from the people who are interested in their bikes. Over all the experience I had at Carlisle has convinced me the I will not be buying a Victory this time around." Dave

Transmission clunk yes. Mine always clunks into 1st but so has every other Vic and HD I have ridden. Should you worry about it? No. Does it get quieter? After almost 8000 miles I can say yes but it will become noticeable again when your clutch cable needs to be adjusted.


Excessive drivetrain lash? Completely untrue, there is almost zero lash. The guy may have been trying to talk himself out of buying a new bike.


Thunking sound when you hit a bump? Yes, if the rear shock was low. Yes, if the bump was big enough to jostle the kickstand. My first demo the shock had 12lbs in it; that wasn't anywhere near enough to carry 265lbs of driver/passenger - it made noise on several bridges. I also noticed that driving over speed bumps to fast will make my kickstand bang after the rear tire rolls over the bump. The same thing happens with speed humps in neighborhoods.


Get to a dealer and demo a bike so you can make your own anaylsis. Remember what they say about opinions...

Victories have a solid transmission - When you shift, you drop the hammer in the next gear. It's a manly bike. At least you don't have to shave your legs to ride it! :ltr:

The way I see it, it's part of the bike's character. Embrace it and enjoy the reliable tank transmission, or hate it, and go for another brand. I've embranced it, and I enjoy dropping it in 1st at stop lights. :cool:

Get to a dealer and demo a bike so you can make your own anaylsis. Remember what they say about opinions...

Thanks for the information. I figured it wasn't any thing major. I plan on taking my own demo ride next week if not sooner. I rented a Harley a few months ago and the tranny "clunked" when I put it in gear. Wasn't a big deal. Please excuse my lack of knowledge on Victorys. I am doing my first time research. I was in the market for a HD until I came across the Victory. I dig the looks and overall package.

Oh! Not to mention I want to be different when attending my local bike night while keeping it American!:D

One of the things that impressed me on my 1st Vic test ride was the incredible smoothness in shifting on the tranny.

Yes, there is a loud clunk in 1st... show me a bike that doesn't clunk into first. That's just the way it is.

Mine shifts like butter, and it LOVVVVVES clutchless upshifts.

I have test ridden a number of bikes over the last month in my quest for the next acquisition, and even though Harley has made some nice improvements, it was still nowhere near the quality feel of Victory.

My friend who owns a number of bikes also loves my Hammer's transmission. He says it is nicer than his Warrior, and typically metrics are known for some of the smoothest transmissions.

My 2009 vegas clunks (5 speed) but no worse than other big basic engines, reassuring over engineering!

yea,i love that "clank" when i drop her in gear,
lets me know im ridin a mans bike,industrial

The other day a guy on a triumph rode by my house, and every time he shifted, it sounded like a someone was hitting the crankcase with a hammer.
He probably was using a hammer in his attempt to make his bike sound like a Victory! dance 1

It was only a matter of time 'till the "clank" caught on. :ltr:
