OK, hoping for some help here. I have an 01 V92c that I bought new in 2002. I didn't ride it at all last year (health issues) I drug it out, cleaned it up and was having an issue where the fuel pump was priming, but no other power to the bike. Cleaned up my ground and everything else looked good. Hooked up battery again & hit the starter and boom, fired up instantly.

I knew I was low on fuel as i had run it low before storing it at the end of '16. I did add stabilizer & ran it through the system. Decided to ride it up to the gas station to get some fresh fuel. Ran great all the way there. I decided to put some premium fuel in it. Leaving from the pump, bike backfired.... big time. Then popped and sputtered as I pulled out on the road... It was barely running, I nursed it through the intersection & into a parking lot where it died. Now it won't fire at all.

I'm thinking that maybe there was stuff in the tank that i stirred up on refuel? Plan is to drain & pull tank and clean the prefilters. Anything else I should check while I'm in there?

I don't know anything about a V92 but I have been through a similar experience with a vehicle.

Some years ago I had a bike an EFI HD that I parked for a few years.
I put a double dose of stabilizer in each year that the bike sat. But didn't pump out the fuel.
I think mine went 3 years or close to that.

When I went to use the bike I used a little hand pump from Harbor freight :

to pump out as much fuel as I could. and because it smelled good, was not discolored, and was clear, with no sediment in it, I threw it in the tank of a fuel injected light truck that I had.
Were talking 2 gallons in with 15 gallons, The trucks tank was 3/4 fuel when I did this. My thoughts were that it would dilute and burn and I wouldn't have to figure out how to dispose of it. :)

Doesn't work that way. Took the truck to another town an hour away, got about 6 mile from that town on the highway and suddenly the truck lost all power. I pulled to the shoulder and kept it running on 2 then 3 then 4 cylinders for several minutes on the shoulder. Eventually it had some power and I limped it to the Napa in that town where we kept it running and added a can of seafoam and a can of EFI cleaner to the tank. After driving it around for a while in town it finally got to the point where it seemed safe to shut it off and we got more fresh gas and all eventually was good.

The problem isn't necessarily sediment. It's that under storage the lighter more flammable components of the gas evaporate out. What is left behind does not burn under spark ignition.

Because of that experience I would buy the pump above and try to get as much of that old fuel mix as I can out of the tank or just pull it and dump it like you said.
But there I would stop and put fresh gas and seafoam in it and see if it will run before you proceed any further.


I would stick with seafoam because as per the instructions on the can you can run a motor on it straight without damaging it.

If it works and it starts and runs at some point shut it off with that extra strong dose of seafoam mix in it and allow it to set for several hours so the seafoam can get stuff softened up.

I'd continue to add some seafoam for a few tanks after it gets cleared up then stop. Over cleaning injectors isn't good for them either. But over cleaning will be down the road from where you are now.

One thing to be careful of.. on the older bikes there is a 'Y' connector under the tank for the fuel lines that has broken on a LOT of people when they to go pull the tank off. Be VERY gentle.. prop up the backside of the tank on a board or something and carefully disengage that connector or you're going to end up with trying to piece together your own junction. That's what I would recommend btw.. take the tank off, drain every drop of used-to-be-gas out of it and clean thoroughly before trying to run gas through it.

When I purchased my 2003 V92 used, It ran well when I demoed it. A couple of days after I got it home it ran like crap. Pulled the plug wires, and one plug was rusted at the top. Changed pugs and wires ran like a top.

Regulator?

Ok, so I took off & drained the tank, cleaned the throttle body, charged the battery again. Put about 4 oz of gas and 4 oz of seafoam in the tank and hooked it all back up. Turned the key and kill switch on. Fuel pump primed (sounded different than normal). I cycled the pump a couple times and hit the starter. If fired up instantly.... ran well for about 3 mins and then started popping and sputtering again. Looked at the alt reading and it was at 12.0. I hit the throttle thinking it would kick up a few ticks, but it stayed pegged right at 12.0. No matter how much throttle i gave it, it sputtered and choked till it quit. So, i started to think that maybe its the battery. Took it to have it tested and they said it tested fine.

So do i have a bad regulator or a bad stator, or both?

I've watched a video on how to test the regulator so i'm going to try that tonight, but if anyone has any ideas feel free to hit me up.

If someone did ( load test ) and battery was fine then yes check regulator and stator. As you know when bike starts the voltage should go up to 14 I think

Most likely it's the R/R that's dead.. not the stator. You don't need to upgrade to the 38 amp stator from the 28amp you have.. lots of folks think you do because the original 'upgrade' kit from Vic had both. The regulator/rectifier that comes stock on the V92's was a POS. You can replace with just about anything after market and be good to go for between 100 to 150.

R/R

Yes, i did have the battery load tested and it was good.

I was too busy to test the rectifier the last two days with the holiday, but I charged the battery overnight @ 2 amps. Took it off the charger and let is sit for about 1 hour. When i tested it i got 12.78 volts. I think that's right where it's supposed to be, yes?

With that being the case I'm leaning towards just ordering the R/R so it's on the way. Figure worse case is if the stator is bad i'll still want to replace that POS R/R anyway.

Any recommendations on which R/R to buy? Looks like a Mosfet from RM Stator is $130 or a Ricks Hot shot for $152

Rectifier for the win!

So I ordered a new rectifier from RM Stator and put it on last night.... BINGO! Was reading 14.4 at 2k and surprisingly was holding at 13.6 at idle. Is that a bit high?

Need to stop at the hardware and grab a waterproof connector as I had to splice in the red wire as the one from RM Stator wasn't long enough to make it all the way back to the block.

Hope to be out and about this weekend though....

Nah, being able to maintain 13.6v even at idle is a good thing.. and shows that your stator is just fine. The other thing that the R/R is supposed to do is shunt excess away from the battery, so you should be fine. :)
