Need guidance on this one...last year I started to notice a tapping sound on the first start up of the day, it lasted for about 30 sec... and for the rest of the day it was normal at start up...but gradually it has gotten worst . Year + later now on every cold start the tapping is longer on warm-up for at lease 1 minute.
Everything is running smooth when she is warm up... Anything I can check before taking it to the shop...any hint would be appreciated , shop is 200 miles away..
Does this bike have Hydrolic lifters , maybe they are bleeding...I'm no Mech Tech but had similar problem on an old Goldwing with hydrolics Lifter discharge..
Was thinking about upgrading my cams...would it be a big job to check or change the lifters at that point in time ?

Start the bike upright, not on the sidestand.... or put something under the sidestand so it's closer to upright.

Once warmed up, you start it sitting on it and upright, yes? You start it cold on the sidestand, yes?

Have you tried a different oil? A heavier viscosity?

I have tried starting her standing up..no difference.
Also tried different oil , full synt 10-40 and 20-50 ....semi-synt 20-40
still no difference on the tapping...but notice the tranny was smoother with full synt.

Why do I think from your original post that I should know what bike you are talking about?

More importantly how old is the bike? How long have you had it? Has it done this since day one?

See what I mean Vern?

I try to shy away from online diagnostics of unknown bikes of unknown vintage but as a general rule, if tapping is referring to top end tapping that often comes from oil settling out, if it lasts more than a couple seconds is telling me that it's time for a stethoscope. Before I tear into it I'm looking at the oil pump pressure and having satisfied myself that oil is not the issue, I am going to pipoint where and then I am going to do some exploratory surgery with expectations of the outcome.

Either way I am done riding it until I have resolved the tapping. No machine that makes noise a minute or even thirty seconds into cold start should be ridden. It is telling you there is a problem. I am not saying that you are killing it. I am saying that if it is progressively worsening, continuing to run it is not likely to improve that condition.

Yes the Hydraulic lifters leak down over nigh. Its not a bad thing cause the old oil drains out and new oil gets pumped in.

Your guna have to leave it over night so the shop can hear it cold, looks like you may need to get a hotel room if the shop is 200 miles away, I assume its not under warranty any longer....:)

Not to scare you, but mine sounded the same way... and now I'm getting a new top end. Better get it checked out.
