Although I recently posted this question to the new members’ folder, I believe this issue is best targeted to the Cross Country forum.

My focus is to find a touring bike that will allow me to ride 6+ hours two up. As soon as we both retire (coming soon), we want to ride to all 48 states in the continental United States (Conus). I have looked at the Honda Goldwing and the Indian Roadmaster, but my best friend suggested I look at the Victory Cross Country Tour (CCT) before plunking down my cash. I am 6’4” tall and 208 pounds. So, here are my questions:

How does the CCT compare to the Roadmaster?
How many hours can you comfortably ride per day on the CCT?
What modifications will make the CCT a better touring bike?
What kind of freeway mileage does the CCT get?
As a tourer, what makes the CCT exceptional?
As a tourer, where does the CCT need improvement?

Any help you can provide would be awesome.

Can't say, but the Roadmaster sure is purdy and it sits well for me. Haven't ridden on because I'm afraid I'd like it too much.

How many hours can you comfortably ride per day on the CCT?
Not long on the stocker, but never got along with any stock seat on some pretty great touring rides so not the best to answer.
In it's current set up with the items listed below, I have several IBA certified rides on the bike.

What modifications will make the CCT a better touring bike?
A Russell Day long is the bomm. We have a Corbin and it is good, but wish Russell would have talked to me about a XCT, it was so new they didn't have a clue for it yet. I wish Harco/Diamond made a seat for them. Don't fall for the Stage 1 mod from the dealer, it is pretty much junk for the X bikes. A Lloyds air filter, timing wheel and a good tuner will cost about the same, reduce heat and increase readability. Stock pipes work very well with this. It irks me to have to "fix" a new bike, but it is worth it.
I will also say in the stock configuration it is still very good.

What kind of freeway mileage does the CCT get?
I get 40-42 MPG.

As a tourer, what makes the CCT exceptional?
The list is long, and almost everything makes it good. The comfort is very good, the road manners are excellent, the handling and agility is also. The seat height makes for comfortable stand stills, good lighting front and rear, decent radio, adjustable controls and passenger floor boards, 3 power ports, lots of luggage, a liberal load capacity, (500+ pounds), enough power to haul you, wife and kitchen seink without effort. Predictable and good low speed handling, great ride and rider.

As a tourer, where does the CCT need improvement?
The improvements are already noted if you want them. It could use a few less quirks, and although for most they are not bad it will tell you how good a rider you are in a hurry through the shifting and throttle revving. If you "blip" the throttle it can make for some scary quirks. The thing needs to be more water proofed. Mine has been very good and run through lots of rain without incident, but it isn't the same for everyone and I can't guess what percentage have problems. A better passenger thought process would also be good. We came from a Wing and they are the gold bar standard IMHO for passenger. The RS Venture was as good, but a bit different. This is per Lostwife and she has enough mileage on her butt to listen closely in any aspect of motorcycling.

I feel you'd be cramped on a Wing, but they are a fabulous bike if they fit.

In stock form the XCT is a bit anemic in my opinion so a Lloydz air filter, timing gear adjuster, and cams really wake the bike up but you will also need a freer flowing exhaust and a PC-V tuner with either the auto tune module or a dyno tune once everything is on the bike. It's best to do everything at once if you can. If you do it all yourself you would be looking at under $2k. Add another $1k if you have a competent mechanic do it for you.

A lot of people opt out of the cams though so you can save a good bit of change there and still end up with a good riding XCT with ample power. Mileage is dependent on terrain, elevation, temps, load, etc. but I think it would be safe to say you could expect at least 36 mpg on the XCT.

A lot of people really like the silky smoothness of the Goldwings. They need nothing as far as making them run better. They come ready to go in that regard. Only the people riding them can say which bike is better for the long haul as far as comfort goes and you will probably get a lot of different answers.

I can say that before you go on your long haul trip; do some shorter 2,3, and 4 day trips to condition your bodies to be on a bike all day most days for some time to come. If you don't do that you will surely be miserable until you do get conditioned and you may end up staying in places longer than you might have wanted just to heal up so to speak. That goes for any bike you get.

Good luck in your search. You will know when you find the right one for you and your lady. :)

I can't say from personal experience but I have read that tall guys are not all that happy with the rider position on the Chieftain or Roadmaster.

How long anyone can ride per day is really dependent on the person and not the bike. All of them will go much longer than any rider can as long as it has fuel to burn.

AT 6'4" I think you're going to be very cramped. I'm 6'2", 220lbs,34' inseam and love it. I also added the Russell Day long seat, and you can't beat the storage room, ground clearance, rear adjustable air shock, and I could go on and on. I also added the Madstad windshield, only because I like to look over instead of through the windshield. During the winter I will put the OEM one back on.

The only thing I don't like is the heat coming off the right rear cyclinder on hot days but since its a V-Twin I don't think you can get away from it unless you remove the hard lower's which is what I am going to do this summer.

My suggestion is to do what I did and rent one. I was able to rent the goldwing and the CCT. At the Victory dealer in Scottsdale AZ.

No offense , this is the most inaccurate statement I have ever heard in my life ..... There are fellas on this forum well beyond 6'6" that praise the XC , XCT for its roominess ... I don't know where you came to this conclusion ... Just say'in .:crzy:

I am 6'5 and the cc or cct has great room to ride for tall and big people. I have rode the Indian and all I felt was cramped and I didn't like the heat off the engine on a hot day. The victory CC or cct will treat you right.

Your feedback is exactly what I was seeking. The Roadmaster forum cites the XCT (sorry for calling it a CCT) as having more room. The 111 Thunderstroke engine is cited as being dramatically better than the 106 ci on the XCT. I am riding a 950 now, so view both engines as a dramatic improvement over my current ride. A stock Indian would be more than sufficient and a slightly modified 106 (extra air intake and a slightly louder exhaust) probably would be equal to the stock 111. I tend to be easy on the throttle anyway, so would expect at least 40 mpg when I ride. My plan for the Roadmaster or XCT was a Russell Day Long anyway, so no problem there.

Hadn't thought about shorter distance trips (2 to 4 days) to get in shape for longer trips. Thanks for the advice on that.

Has anyone towed a cargo trailer with the XCT? I am guessing we will need more storage than is available on the Roadmaster or the XCT. Both have great storage volumes, but on a long trip, extra storage will be needed.

Will I need a riser to alter the handlebar location?

I really like the $6000 savings on the Victory XCT over the Indian Roadmaster

If I was 6'-4" there is only one I would even want to ride on tour. And that's part of its name.

6'4" with 34 inch inseams and 34 inch arm length. I got the impression the XCT was better for the taller rider based on what I was reading on the Indian Roadmaster forum.

None of the riders on the Roadmaster forum posted about having a ride more than 2 hours in length so I was unsure about the long ride capability of that bike. Since I am new to this forum, I had no input on the XCT as a tourer either. I still do not know how long riders are riding distance rides on the XCT and I do not know about towing a cargo trailer. I do know the XCT is now my number one choice when I can afford it.

Really like my XCT and more so when two up with the wife on board. My bike has cams and PCV and easily pulls 410 lbs of us up big summits at 80 mph in 5th gear.

That said, I find the v-twin really induces fatigue on longer rides. I'd much rather be on a honda 6 cyl but I'm just too short in the arms and legs to make it work for 2 up riding.

I have the Madstad windshield system on my bike and wouldn't trade it regardless of looks. Works too well.

My Wife loves the pillion position on the XCT and has no fatigue issues.

I do longer runs than that on a XR that is factory other than cosmetic improvements so a XCT should be able to do the same or better. That said it really depends on the riders ability to maintain for that long or longer.

No. The riser is set but there are many handlebar choices. Many do not need new cables or extended wiring. I currently have the Ness Modular's on mine and like it but then I felt the seemingly higher mini apes available through Victory that felt good with the lower Magnum seat. Still on the fence right now about switching. I may just try making some adjustments to the Modular's and see if I can create a happy medium. (To make an unhappy medium - don't pay her):D

Don't let them talk you into the Stage 1 kit with the Victory (Cobra) mufflers unless maybe it's just the Tri-Ovals. They breathe very good. Then get a good tuner like the PC-V but if cams are not part of the equation at any point; there are other choices but the PC-V is probably the best one right now.

Loud pipes aren't very compatible with long rides. They tend to wear you out, but each has their opinion, and as stated the stocks work very well. Don't ride the Vic like an Indian or HD, they are made to spin a little faster, and will reward the throttle twist.
As for the risers, nope, but the bars can easily be adjusted higher. The trailer? Well, I have a very nice one and used it with the Wing, but haven't seen the need for it on the Tour. I don't see a problem with it pulling one though.

For taller riders, there is no better tourer available than the Vic XCT. I'm 6' even with a 32" inseam and I have space I don't use on the bike, when I now sit in other "touring" bikes(including Indians) I feel positively cramped up. Same goes for the passenger space. The Cross Country Tour has the most space available for gear/luggage of any touring motorcycle. The "Tour" as phenomenal wind management and ergos. The easily adjustable air suspension works well and can be tailored in a minute to riding conditions and load. The Freedom 106 as proven super reliable and as it sits in the XCT is plenty powerful enough for full two up riding, as well as being very quiet, stage1 is available from the dealer if the buyer wants a little more rumble and grunt(with tons of aftermarket options beyond that). The XCT seat IMO is one of the best stock seats sold, its actually comfortable front and back, does not leak and needs little care(unlike leather). I had my seat customized with a minor reshape and upgraded foam for $200 there are plenty of full seats available now if its something to be changed out.

I'd say the draw backs of the XCT to other touring bikes available now is the lack of an electronically adjustable windscreen, weak stock forward lighting and the stock 106 is a bit behind the curve compared to engines like the Thunder Stroke 111 or the GW's Flat 6

Has anyone towed a cargo trailer with the XCT?
We towed a Leesure-Lite tent trailer with ours the first summer we had it. We live in the rockies of B.C. Canada. At that time, I had not done any engine mods. Found that the bike struggled a bit pulling some of the longer, steeper hills but other than that it was fine and we were loaded to the max.

A lighter cargo trailer I'm sure would be easy. We've pulled this trailer with 2 previous bikes ... a GL1800 Wing and a Yamaha Royal Star Venture. There's no comparison with the Wing ... you hardly knew the trailer was there. The Venture hauled it OK but the XCT was a lot better, especially at slow speeds.

I’m 6’5 260, and my wife is 6’2 (if you think im stupid enough to put a weight here you’re loony). We fit on the XC, but when I sit on a roadmaster it just seems cramped up. I did try and ride my uncles wing…notice I said try, first time I hit the brakes my knee almost broke some of the controls on the fairing. 6’5 with a 36” inseam and I have the highway pegs, I can stretch out completely and rest my heels on top of them. Tall people need a XC, but you don’t have to take my word for it, ride them and you will feel the extra room inside 5 minutes.

CCT has floor boards which allow you to move your feet around compared to the Goldwings pegs which make you stay in one position throughout the day. The CCT also has more storage space than a Goldwing.

Definitely rent first if you can. Went from a 2010 Harley Ultra Classic to my 2014 XCT. The Victory is a better bike and we usually do 8-10 hour days on our trips. Give yourself time to break the bike in and make adjustments for performance and comfort. I have the Ultimate Seat and we like it just fine. Also don't forget the other variables in your choice like storage space, entertainment system, navigation, communication, and intercomm. I don't think you would go wrong with the XCT but give yourself some time to make it yours and prepare for the trip.

Another possibility is use the trip to make it perfect. Custom seat stop will get a tuned seat for you. Wife and I made a planned trip to The Vic Shop for their work and a custom PC-V map. Good luck on your choice.

I used to own an old 1978 GL1000 full dress and has no problem with room. The new GL1800 with that six cylinder engine hanging back on my size 13 boots makes shifting difficult and the seat pushed me way far forward. I love my current floorboards and not the pegs on the GW. I will need to save some dollars before I go and test ride the XCT because I will likely want to buy it based on all of the comments
