My wife and I went for a ride today. At a lunch stop, I happened to notice that the pivot pin for the left-side passenger floorboard was sticking waaaay out, i.e., more out, I think, than in. I took an adjustable wrench (a good one, Knipex, not the kind that rounds off bolt heads) - the closest thing to a hammer I had on the bike - and pounded the pin back in place.

When we got home, I took some pics. Here's what you're looking at:

- The right-side pivot pin has a circlip at the non-head end, and what appears to be red threadlocker (that usually designates the "permanent" kind) on and around it.

- The left-side has neither the circlip nor any red remains. This is hard to see, but if you magnify the pic, you can tell that there is a groove there, but nothing in it. (It also looks somewhat butchered around there; this may be the result of my pounding it back in - I certainly didn't do any other work on it.)

- From a parts fiche, I'm talking about #5 in the diagram.

- #5 is actually two parts per side. What I'm talking about being missing is RING, RETAINING.

(Pretending to order this from Honda East Toledo - which is where these diagrams are from - states that this is part #7710644. I'm not going to really order it via the 'Net, because while the part is $0.92, the shipping cost is another $12.99.)

I think this is a serious problem. I mean, it's not your brakes failing, but it's serious. That floorboard was damnnear ready to fall off, which wouldn't have been fun for either my wife or maybe a car behind us.

In fact, I'm probably going to report this to the NHTSA in a bit.

I believe this is probably a factory-installation item (my bike is about three months old, 3,700 miles on it). Does anyone happen to know for certain whether this is a factory set-up or part of dealer prep?

In any case, I suggest that you folks with passenger boards take a look at your pivot pins, and make sure they're ended with circlips.

Wow...really fortunate you happened to be looking at the floorboard. Thanks for the detailed post. I'll be check my pass. pivot pins on my 11' XC tomorrow morning before we head out on our ride. cheers

Could you possibly drill the pin and put a cotter pin thru it? Not sure looking at the pics if thats feasible but it might be a quick easy cheap fix.

Actually - really - I thought of that, too, and I may do it. It's definitely possible. The reason I thought about it is because a few years ago I bought a cotter-pin assortment from Harbor Freight (there's a store a couple of miles away), on sale, and probably with a 20% discount, and probably got a free flashlight. Anyway, the collection is 555 cotter pins, and so far I've used two. So I have a lot left.

First, I'm going to a local-ish Vic dealer and see what they want for the circlip, i.e., if they can just order one that I can pick up, without paying shipping. The groove for it is definitely present.

You may be able to take the circlip off the other floorboard and match one up at Ace Hardware or some other local hardware store. I would be safe in saying the price would be 1/2 what the dealer will probably charge you. Good luck should be an easy fix either way. I would go back with the clip if the grooves were still good on the pin. I couldnt tell from your pics if the groove was still in the pin. BTW Im new to the forum Ive been lurking here gathering info. I presently have an 06 Roadliner S that Im trying to sell and Im very interested in the Cross Country Touring. Looks like it would be comfortable for me and the wife as a two up bike. My Roadliner is set up for Solo. If it dont sell I will just keep it and buy the Victory straight out next year but it looks alreay as if I will need the 2" pull back handlebars and definitely want the heel shifter. Im praying the stock seat is adequate since Im buying it for comfort especially for the wife to be comfortable. Whats your opinion on the stock seat? Does your wife ride as a passenger? Is she comfortable on the bike?

My 02 cents worth of our two-up comfort on our stock and heated touring seat is very good. We've done 200+ mile days without any complaining of a sore/painful butt. I think I've noticed a majority of the members here have the same experience with the stock seat, but all of us have different comfort thresholds, so it really depends on how it works for you. There are a few aftermarket mfgs. making custom seats for the Cross bikes. cheers

I have a vision and the seat is vey comfortable. But I did see an ad where Ultimate is making a seat for the CR and the Vision it in the veery good neighborhood of $1,000.00. Thank you for the information on the passenger pegs.thumb up

Dave, Thanks for the info on the comfort level of the Vic. Hopefully you can answer another question I have. Whats the difference in the Cross Country vs Cross Country Touring? From what I gather they are the same bike with the exception of the tour trunk..is this a correct assumption? My main reason for asking is #1 Are the seats the same (concerned again with comfort and not having to drop more $ on an aftermarket seat) and #2 I know without the touring trunk the bike is much cheaper so what Im wondering is if I bought just a plain cross country can I purchase the matching tour trunk at a later time and make the bike a touring model or do you have to purchase the touring model in order to get the matching trunk? I know these are probably questions that the dealer would answer but after riding Yamahas for several years Ive found out the dealer sales staff dont know as much about the bikes as I do from educating myself reading and looking at forums. Most of them are basically uniformed. I trust peoples info that own and ride them because I know theyve learned from their experiences. The Vic looks like it holds a good resale value and there doesnt seem to be a lot of cheap priced leftovers from year to year either. Im definitely not buying this year Im going to wait and see what they offer on the 2013 model and may try to find a leftover this time next year or just wait another year on a 2014 because I plan on buying one more bike before I retire in Aug. 2015 and it will be the last bike I ever buy so Im in no hurry and the models should only improve. Thanks for replying to my posts.

- The XCT comes with the same trunk that you can add later to the XC.

- The XCT comes with heated front and rear portions of the seat. I don't think the XC comes with that. And I think the seats are otherwise the same, i.e., same padding and dimensions.

- The XCT comes with the wind-management system. This consists of: the round tubular crash bars, instead of the forged flat-ish crashbars; the lower pods with cubbies and movable vents; the movable winglets attached to the fairing. All of these can be added (or replaced, in the case of the crash bars) as Victory parts - or, in the case of the fairing winglets, via the aftermarket.

- The XCT comes with heated grips. Not sure whether the XC comes standard with these.

- Edit: forgot a biggy: the XCT comes with adjustable passenger floorboards; the XC doesn't.

Of course, if you add all of this to an XC, it will cost more than buying an XCT.

Thanks for that info Bill. I live in FL and dont really need the heated grips or seats? Would be nice to have in the event Im out touring somewhere though. Im guessing those have an off and on switch? and from what you described it looks like getting the touring model would be cheaper in the big picture but does that limit you in color selection? or can you order any Cross Country you want as an XCT? and thereby get the XCT pricing? Sorry for all the questions but I really appreciate your response. Im really excited about the Victory lineup. It will probably be my next and last bike.

My wife likes the comfort of the XCT. The longest she's been out back on it - without a stop - has been an hour-and-a-half stint; she said that's about enough, without getting off to stretch. She really likes the adjustability of the floorboards. We've been experimenting with the medium vs. the low position; she prefers the low for riding, but the medium position makes it a little easier for her to get on.

I had a Valkyrie Interstate for seven years, so she's used to this type of bike. (I then owned a Burgman 650 for five years, and that sucked big-time, in terms of passenger comfort. I had a one-off backrest for her made, but couldn't do anything regarding her feet positioning.)

Anyway, on the Valk, I replaced the passenger trunk-mounted backrest with an aftermarket one (from Ultimate seats), to straighten the angle for her; no such change is necessary for the XCT. Also, I had a Laminar Lip on the Valk windshield; I have a Klockwerks Flare on the XCT, and she said that she gets minimal buffeting - it's fine - out back, even though she rides higher, vs. my level, than on any bike we've had. We've done several hours of interstate-highway riding already - no complaints out back.

In short, she likes the XCT, and it looks like it will be fine for all-day trips.

There are high/low/off positions for all three: grips, front seat, rear seat.

The colors are specific to each model. That is, the XC has its own few colors, and the XCT has its own (different) colors; the optionally-ordered trunk for the XC will match the bike.

How much trouble is it to remove the tour trunk from the XCT in the event I want to go out and ride with the guys on a weekend day trip?

Not too bad... I understand. I've never done that, so search the forum - lots of knowledgeable folks have discussed this.

Incidentally, you may be used to this with your Roadliner in FL. The X-series bikes get HOT when not moving. I really dislike the engine heat when stopped, and will probably get around to adding a Power Commander or something like that, just to get the engine less lean, and hence cooler.

I understand the Roadliner's air-cooled too, right? The only other air-cooled bike I've had was an 850 BMW, 1997 - 2000, and I don't recall its engine being that hot (okay, and it was half the size of the XCT's, too).

Yes the Roadliner is air cooled. Love the air cooled V Twins. Engine heat is not that bad except when stopped anything is bad :) To be honest with you when it gets in the dead heat of summer here we simply dont ride unless we do an early morning brkfst run and get home by noon then its practically unbearable by the time we get back. Dont have much of a fall and winter does get cold enough to have several days where riding is out of the question and when you time the cold fronts with having weekends off it seems it always gets cold on weekends and the 70's which are ideal occur during the working week days. Go figure!! So we have a long riding season if you can bear the heat but if not the season is not that long. The Liner has a factory oil cooler which probably helps. That may be something for you to consider on the Vic. if an aftermarket is available. I really love my Liner but to turn it into the Vic Tourer I would have to put out another three or four thousand and then Ive sunk even more money into the bike that I will never get out of it except for riding it. Decisions Decisions how boring would life be without these dilemas LOL

Ah, didn't mention it, but the X-series have built-in oil coolers. Go to http://www.polaris.com/en-us/victory-motorcycles/touring/cross-country-tour/pages/features.aspx and click on SPECS.
