I bought a jackpot 10 months ago with the extended full 5 year Victory warranty. Driving home to night I start hearing this sqeeling on the highway. I pulled over as fast as I could but the back tire locked up just as I was pulling into the breakdown lane. One of the pully bolts backed out and locked up against the swingarm only after taking a decent grove out of my swingarm. Im so lucky I didn't crash. My question is would these be considered a warranty issue. The bike only has 5k miles and has never been apart.

Should be IMO

I would think it would. They are lucky you did not get hurt. I would think they would warranty it with no problem. If the dealer says no I would be calling the head office. You got the 5 year warranty and it should not have happened.

I agree. If you have not touched those pulley bolts; they should warranty it. They can easily tell if there are any tool marks on the other bolts to verify it.

You should be very,very unhappy if they give you a hard time about it.
Let us know how you make out.

Went by the dealer today. They didn't think it was going to be an issue with the warrenty. They said they would tear it appart and send the pics to Polaris. I asked if I could grab the pulley while they have it apart. Figured it would be a good time to have it powder coated black

Spoke with the dealer today. Victory is covering everything. Hub, Sprocket and swingarm. Hopefully parts will be in soon so I can drop the pully off at the powdercoaters!!!

I picked up the bike today. Love the pulley blacked out. they replaced the swingarm, pulley and rim. Service was great and all fully covered under warrenty. Happy owner.

I've been playing with fasteners for a long time I can offer a little insight...

Fasteners dont come loose from vibration they come loose by working loose from cyclic load i.e every time you let the clutch out load is applied to the pulley... every time you put clutch in load via engine goes away and comes back... cyclic load!

To overcome this cyclic load and stay tight fasteners are spec'd by thread type and size for the loadings to be overcome.

To add to the fasteners ability to not come loose a torque setting is spec'd for the fastener. This gives the right clamping force for the component and stops fastener failure from taking the fastener beyond its elastic limit causing failure (over-tightening).

Also... in many situations thread lockers are specified. These do as they say (amongst other things like anti-gall, anti-corrosion for example) and help lock the fastener.

In very critical areas with high cyclic loads race wiring is done as a third method to ensure fastener doesnt come out before inspection picks up fastener is loose.

And that leads us to ... INSPECTION! Most external cyclic load fasteners need it!!

The inspection listed for those fasteners in the manual is at 500 mile and again at 5000 mile. (swing arm and rear axle).... or at least annually.

As to why it came loose... pick from above and look for a method/spec failure above. The torque bar on the air gun may have been fatigued... who knows?

On our bikes there are what I term... killer fasteners and non-killer fasteners!

Killer fasteners are ones that if they come loose has high odds of killing you... handlebars, brakes, anythng to do with drive belt, axle, steering et cetera.

Non-killer fasteners have a very low chance of killing you... seat bolt, number plate bolt, cheese wedge bracket fastener.... you get the drift!

Regularly inspect killler ones!! More than every 5000 in my humble opinion.

The rear pulley is hard to get a socket on to check for tightness but is easily done in 5 seconds... if you feel the top of the head of the fastener and then move finger towards axle centre there is a little machined relief... the head is almost flush with this relief... and bolt unwinding would be felt past relief way before it hits swingarm.

So every now and then run finger over the 5 heads. When washed for example?

Sorry to go on a bit but you are right... those particular bolts are in the killer fastener area!!!

Glad you are ok and no long term damage to bike!!

Three seperate tech's looked at it and all said the same thing. They have never seen anything like it. Unfortunately these bolts are not something that you can readily put a torque bar on with the rim on the bike. I got lucky. But at least of was able to get the new pulley powder coated. Love it

So, does Victory approve of powder coating this pulley? I was under the impression if this was altered with paint, chrome, etc. that it would change the ability of the bolts to remain tight.

Hmm, wonder how? My Kingpin 8-ball pulley came powder coated from the factory.
As a matter of fact, wonder if they couldn't have just ordered an 8-ball pulley from the start?

Yup they are all powdercoated from the factory so I see no issue. My shop used to do all my engine mods to my Go Fast bikes and they use the same powdercoater. All parts have to go back to victory so they wouldn't have matched. The mask off any of the machined surfaces and the belt section

I will bet that is the trick. Mask of the machined area the mates up to the hub. Makes sense. Thanks for the replies.
