OK...I have a really dumb question....or maybe I just missed the boat...why is it that Bikes are classified as either a Harley or as a Metric Cruiser...? I used to think that the Metric Bikes were the foreign bikes out there....but everywhere I look the Victory's are classified as one also.....any light on this would satisfy my curiosity....thanks.................Paul

I would say they are classified as metric because the bolts, nuts etc. are metric not SAE.
It is the same on most bikes that are not a Harley.

In 1975 the USA put into law the Metric Conversion Act, which all products made from that point on would be to a universal metric scale so it would conform to global standards.All the existing companys at the time were grandfathered in to be able to stay SAE scale as so they would not have to suffer the great costs of retooling there entire production lines to meet the regulation.Harley did not face what the big three automakers had at the time, which was problems with a hodge podge of mismatching SAE and metric bolts because of there overseas and Canadian production plants. Which would force them to make the changeover after all.So with that being said even though your Victory is an American production bike it is called a metric because it is built in metric scale.Which now leads me to an interesting question now that HARDLY oh I mean Harley has production plant in India and they outsource there front ends from China how long before they to take the metric badge??

Actually the front end on a HD is not china made but made in Japan.
The same company that makes Honda shocks and forks and a lot of others

Yes the Victory is considered to be metric because of the fasteners.

Years ago other than a HD or European bikes were considered rice burner, jap made but this all changed when the so called Jap bikes started to out perform and out last the American made, and European bikes.

Jap bike or rice burner started to disappear in the 80's
Today only the uneducated or the die hard HD types continue to use such disrespecting slang

So the Victory is a metric bike

Metric Cruisers are Japanese produced cruiser bikes, Honda, Star, Kawasaki. amd Suzuki, just as "Rice Bikes" are Japanese sport bikes:D

Victory is an anomaly, rather new on the grid.

thanks Muffin Man...that's sort of what I was getting at...in actuality I believe there are more American parts on my Vic than there are on a Hardly....

Cruisers tend to run in size from 800cc to 2000cc, yet don't include hard bags or fairings. The latter put those bikes into the "touring" class.
Cruisers cover a pretty wide spectrum that's everything not a sport, dual-sport, touring or custom built.
Not sure of the fasteners used on Indian's, so they too could be another American bike considered a metric. I call them "expensive".

We have a winner folks!!

I would put Indian in the Custom category because they make so few of them per year and they are little more than an expensive collector item. It was good to see them come out with their own engine but I hear it isn't all that great. When they had the S&S motors they were solid mounted, without counter balancing, and vibrated so bad they weren't much good for long distance riding and things tended to break on them frequently.

There was a time when calling a bike a "metric" had an underlying derogatory meaning. Those days are long gone. HD would do well to switch to metric fasteners since they sell more overseas than they do in the USA now. I'd also like to see them get rid of the "star head" fasteners. They are too much like a Philips fastener in that they strip out too easy and it's too easy to use the wrong size on them. Heck; I've had to break out a bright light and reading glasses just to tell if it was a Star or Allen head.

Depends on the website too. I have see some that lump Vics with Metrics and some that list Victs on their own like they do with HD.

That said, you have several metric bolts and nuts on an HD. Working on my 2008 Softail I wold have to use both tool boxes.

At least with my Vic I know I will only need one box, metric or not!cheers
