Hit the Motel 6 chain. They are all across the USA. Not the best you could stay in but you being the outdoors type would love it.

Here is another thing to think about. Safety of your scoot. Since you are planning ahead post your route. That way others can give you the best areas to stay in.

Good idea...when we finalise it i will post my route!
Security is a concern especially leaving bikes out side motels. Have been yelled at several times here in NZ when the patrons have seen me wheel my bike out from the bedroom!! LOL is always good for a laugh...just tell them aleast i didnt start it inside!
Still it is a concern bein in an unfamiliar country so any advice will definately be listend to!
Plan is so far CA - San fran via Coast road. San fran - Reno - Saltlake - beartooth - Sturgis general direction! Will then hopefully skip to Milwaukee ,down to Chicargo( maybe ) go to National motorbike museum ? ?( is this any goog ) drop down to the National Vic rally ?? then some route66...just so i can say i did!!! colorado - Utah - Vags of course!! ( there are Hopefully 4 of us coming and we all turn 40 this year so birthday party in VAGAS Yeha ) then hobble back to california where my wife and kids will meet me for 5 days of disneyland fun!!....thats my take on it have to wait and see what the other boys want to do!!....tis a lot of riding to jam in to 28 days and we may not make all the ports but im sure going to love trying!!!

You wont be too far off of where I live in South Dakota - if you swing by, I'll buy you a beer.

Also, in a few weeks, I'm actually heading your direction - going to visit some friends who live in NZ for a few weeks in early March. I was debating on renting a bike and taking a little ride, but too much of my budget got spent on the airfare.

When i camp i use a big blue tarp. I have 2 plastic pipes I use with it they just tie on my seat. They are as tall as me. Be careful they can melt your pipes if your not careful. Camps cost about $12.00.

The bike thing is not a big deal, I'm kind of glad I don't have the money - I would probably end up riding down the wrong side of the road and gettin into an accident anyways...

I'm flying into Auckland, which I see is not too far away from where you live. To make a long story short, I am not sure where I'll be, I plan on roaming around as much as possible.
