I hear that the fuel guage is only good for the first 2/3 and then is not reliable the last 1/3 of the tank? If this is true, how do you know when to fill, just by the light?

I had a Harley and generally it got about 42MPG, but when in 6th gear ripping down the highway, it got a lot worse MPG so I could not go by the odometer either and it sounds like the MPG for the 106 Victory is simular.

I am asking several questions, as I am strongly considering the Victory instead of the Harley this time, but I am not sure yet. Thank you for any input you can provide. cheers

I think the gage is pretty good. Once you find out how many miles to the gallon you get your trip meter will be right on a long with your trip mileage. When the light comes on for sure go get gas. Its not as bad as guys make it out to be.

On mine the gauge does drop out at the end quicker then you would think but I've pushed a calm 60 miles out of mine after the light came on solid and the tank took 5.4 gal to fill. For me once the light is on I start looking if I have not topped off at a rest earlier. If not I figure 40 miles once the light is on before I have to worry about finding a station. Has served me for the last few years and I've never had to push my bike into the pumps.

On paper mine is a 4.7 gal. No gauge at all.

When mostly commuting to work- I see the light at about 170 miles. Fairly heavy traffic and stop/go.

When just out on it riding- (with a little restraint :rolleyes:) I know I would get over 200. I haven't actually done that, but I have to 190 miles and got gas because I knew I was close, and it was a good spot to stop.

No fuel light was on- but based on how much it took to fill up- it was due at any time. Nevertheless- 210 out on the highway would be a no brainer without hammering on it.

I will say that the light is not playin'. At the end of my very first tank- it died on me about 15 or 18 miles after light came on :p. I coasted into the station.. I re-read the manual and determined that it said it "illuminates with less than 1 gallon"- not 1 gallon.

To say the gauge is unreliable is an inaccurate statement! The gauge does not decrease with the amount of fuel in the tank in a "linear" manner. However, when the INSTRUMENT gauge shows EMPTY...you should UNDERSTAND that you need to get gas...usually pretty promptly (within 20-30 miles). But to say it's not right is incorrect.

I have over 34,000 miles on my bike and have done a half dozen trips where I rode 1000+ miles in a day...the gauge is repeatable. Remember, the gauge can be effected by temperature, terrain and especially your throttle hand...

The gauge is a NON-issue on this bike.

Go ahead and git it. :)

My guess is that 30 days after you buy this bike...your friends will rarely hear the word Harley in your speaking. :ltr::ltr::ltr::ltr:

It's very repeatable.

Just remember the low fuel light is going to come on with the same amount of fuel remaining every time. How you react from there is up to you.

I treat the low fuel light just like the reserve side of the petcock on my old bikes. When the light comes on I start planning my stop, if I been riding fast I'll slow down to extend the range if the nearest fuel is a ways out.

i have a 2013 XCT and just got back from a trip. the gauge would stay at full for quite a while then it would start going down. it is a bit weird but i use this as a GENERAL indicator of fuel. when it gets to about 1/2 i simply stop and top it off if possible. i plan my trips and know where the gas stations are. i have a Honda VTX that doesn't have a gas gauge. i just learned to know when to get gas. don't relay on them, is the bottom line

The needle on my '13 XCT goes down slowly for the first half then seems to drop quickly when it gets below that. When group riding, it isn't a problem because we plan our gas stops about every 120-140 miles and that's well within range. When solo riding, I always start looking for gas when the light comes on however. This thing has a 5.8 gal tank and I've rarely had to put much more than 4 gal in it, which tells me that the light is coming on well before I'm in danger of actually running out of gas. I try not to push it, but the most I've ever had to put in was around 4.9 gal, still nearly a gal less than the stated capacity.

Seems I have a similar issue with my gauge.

First I find it difficult, for lack of better word, to get the tank 100% full.

I have to continually top it off to get the gas all the way to the very top. Not an issue unless I'm going on an long ride.

Second the gauge does not move off full until I have done about 55 miles. The second half of the gauge moves much faster.

Again not a real issue because I calculate my millage every tank full.

It would be nice if the gauge was a little more linear.

Same here. I have run my bike until the light has come on a couple different times and when the light has come on I had about 1.5 gallons left give or take.

1. You're not supposed to fill the tank to the top of the neck. Read the book.
2. Haven't any of you fuel gauge complainers ever had a vehicle before?

Lol I agree with Depot Picker. fill it until the pump shuts off. And then check your mileage. i dont depend on the gauge at all
