Saddlebag Rattle Fix??

I've now got just over 6k miles on the Cross Country and as is expected I'm loving it...for the most part.

It appears that my saddlebags are making a racket that is driving me nuts. The problem doesn't appear to be the bags themselves but the lids. Every time I hit a bump I get a "knock" that sounds like I left a pipe wrench laying in the bottom of an empty saddlebag. The lids appear to have just enough play in them even with the soft cushy weather stripping that they're banging against the latches with every bump in the road.

There's a rubber bumper on the lid itself right at the latch mechanism that looks like it's supposed to damp the play in the bag but it's compressed pretty good. If I replace it it's just gonna happen again and I'm wondering if anybody smarter than me has figured out a fix for this problem. I'm assuming that I'm not the only one that is tired of listening to the noise.

Before we went for a little put this afternoon I wrapped the latch bar with electrical tape and the problem diminished greatly. I'll try the vacuum hose trick when I find a small piece laying around. It's a piss poor design if I've got to fix it 6k miles down the road.

i cut my latch loop off and made a new backplate so its now adjustable.

I added some self adhesive foam weather stripping to my lids, along the 3 outer sides, to help better seal them (kept finding the bags full of dust after any trip that had any gravel roads at all) by sealing them better I also eliminated all rattles associated with the lids, and I am in hopes that the lid being tight against the latch will help eliminate any future wear caused by the factory flawed and poorly engineered latch mechanism in the right hand side bag. I have to actually physically apply a little pressure to close the lid now to make sure they are closed, but I also reduced the dust issue to almost nothing. The gasket material was a closed cell 3/4 inch wide by 1/4 inch thick roll of self adhesive weatherstripping variety available at pretty much any place like Lowes, HomeDepot, Menards, etc.

one thing i didnt have trouble with was the seal on the bags leaking, living on gravel my bags stay pretty clean on the inside, but it never seated tight so the lid was always a little loose

I've had an epiphany!!!

I normally run 35 psi or thereabouts in the suspension when the wife is on the back and on our little putt down the river Sunday the bag lids were nice and quiet with the electrical tape wrapped around the latch hoop. Yesterday I got on the bike to run downtown and dropped the air down to the 8-10 psi that I normally have in it when I'm solo. Going down the street the lids are once again making racket so when I got to my first stop I pulled the air pump out and dropped it to 3-5 psi. All of a sudden the bag lids are once again silent, go figure.
